Originally built by the Byzantine fortress, the harbor served as protection from invaders. Lusignan castle was built in the 13th century AD, destroyed by the Venetians in the 16th century and restored again by the Turks. It was during the Ottoman period the building was remodeled, expanded and strengthened and now serves only as a distinctive landmark of the city.
Paphos Castle |
Castle of Paphos in Cyprus is a stunning example of stone architecture. It looks more like a giant structure made of stone, than the castle. This squat rectangle placed at the entrance to the harbor of the city, you can hardly miss the look. Like the outside, the castle looks empty inside. Bare rectangular stone walls in the empty large rooms, very narrow staircase leading to the roof, with a wonderful view of the harbor of Paphos and the new distant Troodos mountains holding up the sky - this is perhaps the most striking elements of the interior.
Lets go to see what inside |
We visited that Castle the same day when we visited Paphos Archaeological Park. That was 17th of April - is international Day of museums. These places are just very near. And after we had a tasty launch in a cafe near there.
My expression - inside it looks much smaller comparably to outside size - I don't know why it seemed t me so. Babies liked to ran around. Its was a little bit scary with 3 babies to go up stairs. There are very narrow.
Paphos Castle |
During its long history, Paphos Castle was used as a fortress, a mosque and a prison, and with the arrival of the British government used the building as a giant repository of salt. In 1935, the castle of Paphos was added to the national monuments of archaeology and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The castle you can go through an arched bridge that leads from the port. A large area in front of the building is used for cultural events throughout the year. First of all, there is a festival of Aphrodite and then imposing building in the harbor of becoming a dramatic backdrop for opera performances.
